Preface
OVERVIEW
The State of the Industry

Amidst the backdrop of Covid-19, special attention has been placed on the shortcomings of the global supply chain. Evidenced by global shipping delays resulting from pandemic shutdowns and the blockage of the Suez Canal by the Evergiven, there is clear room for improvement in the sector. Document storage, organization, and shipment visibility depend on physical handoffs and person-to-person check-ins, creating moments for human error at every touchpoint.

Enter LogTrack, the all-in-one shipping logistics dashboard. With a focus on information transparency, easy operational planning, and built-in document management, LogTrack aims to tackle the supply chain from two fronts: serving the needs of the transporters and the needs of the freight forwarders through connected user experiences.
PRODUCT SCOPE
Our Client's Design Challenge

Hired by the LogTrack team to overhaul their current system, our goal was to create two disparate platforms that relied on a shared feedback loop for success:
  • A mobile interface for transporters that allowed shipment tracking and prioritized timely document upload.
  • A desktop dashboard for freight forwarders and other supply chain managers to manage shipments, access relevant documentation, and share it with third-party partners.
THE SOLUTION
A Two-Pronged Answer to Shipment Tracking & Document Issues

Introducing LogTrack, a 360 visibility and one-stop documentation management platform for the global supply chain. LogTrack works across two connected applications, a mobile interface for truckers to process shipment documentation and a desktop dashboard for clients to track shipments and share those documents.

Analysis
RESEARCH GOALS + PROCESS
Contextualizing the Shipping Environment

To gain a better grasp of LogAware’s place in the industry, our team set out to analyze the current state of the global supply chain. Through a blend of company and market research, as well as user interviews (truckers, dispatchers, supply chain managers), key insights were identified as potential areas of opportunity for LogAware’s new tracking dashboard, LogTrack.
KEY QUOTES
What People in the Industry are Saying
  • “There’s always a lot of back and forth, of people just trying to get information from each other. I definitely think that slows the process down, and it leaves a lot of room for error, a lot of room for things getting mixed up and confused and forgotten.”
  • “I want to stress the importance of personal relationships within this industry. It’s an industry that relies so so heavily on building relationships with people. If you are loyal to one company, they will always do whatever they can for you.”
  • “There’s so much of the system that is out of our control.”
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Opportunities for Intervention & Growth

Based on the information collected from our market research (including competitive and comparative feature analyses, business model canvases, and empathy maps) and the user interviews, we identified several actionable insights in need of design solutions:
  • Multiple platforms are required for third-party communication and shipment management.
  • Third-party document sharing and messaging features rarely exist within the same platform, or are locked behind expensive paywalls.
  • Drivers often don’t submit documentation on time, because it’s inconvenient to digitize the amount of paperwork they deal with.
  • Multiple handoffs throughout a shipment complicate the process and leave room for human error.
REPRESENTATIVE USERS
Understanding Our Target Audience

To better conceptualize LogTrack’s dual functionality, the team created archetypal users and outlined their typical shipment journeys to reflect the behaviors, needs, and frustrations of our two target groups: shipment transporters and operations managers. The insights drawn from this process grounded our future design decisions in the needs of real users with real problems.
The Long-Haul Trucker
Goals:
  • Complete, upload, and manage required documentation
  • Log and maintain delivery and inventory information
Needs:
  • Reminders to send/upload required documention
  • Tools to manage cargo information and documentation
Frustrations:
  • Difficulty keeping track of documentation
  • Physically logging cargo information leaves room for human error
Opportunities:
  • A centralized platform for managing shipment information
  • Easier methods for file conversion and sharing
  • Push notifications to remind drivers of document uploads
The Truck Tracker
Goals:
  • Manage shipments and documents
  • Communicate with drivers, customers, and other supply chain parties
Needs:
  • Tools to organize and manage documents
  • Ways to balance communication with multiple parties
Frustrations:
  • Tedious manual work and documentation creates possibility for mistakes
  • Difficulty getting in touch with drivers while using different platforms
Opportunities:
  • Provide document management tools for organizing and sharing
  • Creating guidelines for push notifications to be sent to drivers, reminding them of timely document uploads.

DESIGN OVERVIEW
The Creative Solution to LogAware's Problem

After synthesization of data from market research, user interviews, and current platforms, we moved into design with two archetypes to guide decision making. Through feature prioritization, we pinpointed essential tasks that LogTrack’s new platform would have to perform:
Mobile Trucker Interface:
  • Easy Onboarding Process
  • Simple Work Status Changes
  • Unintrusive Tracking
  • Intuitive Document Uploads
  • Push Notification Reminders
  • Document Management
Client Desktop Dashboard:
  • Clean, Informative Dashboard
  • Real-Time Tracking
  • Document Management
  • Easy Shipment Information Sharing
  • Geofencing
We refined our design across four rounds of iteration, from design studio sketching through medium-fidelity wireframes into high-fidelity mockups, user testing our product at every step in the process.

PRODUCT TESTING + IMPROVEMENTS
Evaluating the Product for Hand-Off

In order to ensure we were handing off the best product to our client, we conducted three rounds of usability tests to assess product intuitiveness and gain real user insights for consequent design iterations. These tests occurred across medium and high fidelity prototypes, with 25 people performing six tasks representative of typical actions in the mobile trucker interface and the desktop client dashboard. Success was gauged through time spent on task, path to end goal, and overall easiness rating (1-5).
IMPLEMENTATION & FUTURE TIMELINE
Outlining a Plan for Continued Achievement

Like any user-centric product, LogTrack’s path to success isn’t finished. In order to stay ahead of the market and grow into the ideal platform for the shipping logistics industry, there will continue to be room to refine and build upon initial designs and testing. As part of our deliverables, our team outlined a blueprint of next steps for the LogAware team:
  • Continued Desktop Feature Development (Messages, Search, etc)
  • Expanded Geofencing Options (List View, Groups, etc)
  • Integrated APIs for Document Sharing & Map Functionality
  • Marketplace for Shipment Booking
  • Success Metrics
  • Industry-Targeted Usability Testing
  • iOS Version of the Mobile Trucker Interface (for the US Market)
